I remember reading something about copyright issues for guest chars and stuff, i think for Freddy, and maybe soundtracks.
And i heard some people saying it was cause the game dont fit the politically correct views NRS embraced latter
However, because Freddy was part of the "Komplete Edition" that Steam had, there was no way to simply disable the DLC and let the rest of the game on the store.
The funny thing... He was a pretty barebones character, very uninspired and based on the remake instead of the legendary Robert Englund. A sh*tty DLC character "killed" one of the greatest games in the series lol.
The game is simply
a) Much better than the current_year NRS turds.
b) Ruins the progressive image of WBNRS.
Ed Boon himself also talked trash about it in his notorious Playboy interview. WB goes around to put trigger warnings on old movies, some of them even got digitally censored with some of the worst CGI ever. The game simply makes WBNRS feel uncomfy, and that's why it got removed. Go read about WB dedication to ESG, and then imagine them saying that with MK9 Jade pole dancing in the background. Now do you get it?
Emulation is the way, then. And mugen, MK Project Ultravitalized is a fan treasure, I have more fun playing it than MKX and MK11.
In the minds of people who do this, they really think they're some sort of Supermen fighting "shameful injustices of the past". I recall a long time ago, Ed Boon saying something like "I want MK to be like DC". Explains quite a lot already...
MUGEN games are ok but essentially they're just Trilogy games with few belts and whistles added. Also they're purely single player. I still play MK9 online and most of the time have an absolute blast. Game is simply that good even with all the problems.
Well, I'll have to find a way to play again MK9, simply the game that saved the MK franchise and now Ed Boon is drunk and ungrateful to throw away. I won't touch MK12 before that.
That being said, often with older products, they will still be available, just with a disclaimer on the store page saying something like "this game/cartoon/comic/etc. is from an earlier time and contains content that may be considered offensive. These depictions do not reflect our company's current values, but have not been altered in order to preserve the context of the original work." It's a hollow statement coming from a corporation, but it's much preferable to removing the original from the market and pretending it doesn't exist. I'm in favor of diversity and progressivism, but I'm not in favor of the digital equivalent of a book burning; very few actual progressives are.
