It was the PERFECT blend of:
- Roster
- Environments
- Gameplay
- Outfits
- No dumb variations.
I also agree that wokeness is written all over the later games. It started a 'little' bit with MKX, but it didn't go over the top. Like even tho Mileena's outfit in MKX was less sexualised, it still looked cool, and Kitana also had her Tournament alternate outfit which was cool too.
But MK11. Easily the WORST out of the modern mk games for several reasons:
- Wokeness dialled up to 10 (except for Sindel)
- Change to Kitana's ethnicity and curves were unneeded and a MASSIVE downgrade, which also extends to Mileena cause twins
- GAMEPLAY. Omg the gameplay was like 10 steps back. This dumbed down footsie style gameplay that caters to esports has ruined it completely for me.
Like, go watch some youtube vids of some esports finals in all the games. Look at the difference in pace between MK9/MKX and MK11. So damn boring with what it has become. Like they purposely increase recovery time after each of your standard 3 hit combos to intentionally REDUCE the ability to juggle and do awesome combos?????? really???
MK11 was a big L in my opinion. From what I've seen of MK1, it's a step in the right direction with more combo variety and creativity, but it still looks like MK11 2.0.
For whatever reason, though, I feel like MK1 is going to be the black sheep. The game's announcement only came a couple months before the title is set to release, there hasn't been a whole lot of information released on it (barring the leak), relatively little fanfare, and there's this odd bit of "some characters are redesigned, others aren't," and the ones that aren't look very out of place versus the ones that are. Sonya, for example. I love the original MK, and Sonya was one of my favorites, but her spandex design just looks so... out of place when standing next to the other characters in this game. This kind of reminds me of Killer Instinct's retro costumes, and how bad they looked compared to the newer ones, in part because many of them were incredibly simplistic and in today's era of graphical capabilities, look very uninspired. Also, the kameo system screams "FGC legitimacy move", which is odd because I thought 11 was very prominent in FGC tournaments as is?
Although I'm not thrilled with some of the social stances of the people who work on this franchise and how they've found their way into the series over the past couple iterations, I find Mortal Kombat has had strong patterns of consistent enjoyment throughout the life of the franchise, so I'm definitely willing to check this game out, but it does make me feel like this is Mortal Kombat 11.5, or Mortal Kombat Alpha, which ends up later being considered not part of the main series. Again, I'm not sure why I'm fully getting this vibes, and I could be - and most likely am - totally wrong, but that's just how I've felt about this title since I first heard about it.
I really loved that game and its what got me from "oh cool, MK" to "YESSSSS MK!!!!"
I'm not fond of it either, but it was there in Marvel vs. Capcom too: You could choose two characters while having an extra one as an "Assist". Lots of them appeared before (Magneto, Juggs, etc), but there were new ones as well (Devilot, Thor, etc).
If I recall correctly, even a KoF did it in one of their games. In the end it's just a way to add... Well, more characters as cameos.
It doesn't fit MK at all though.
