They are gonna sell way more than 5000 copies just like the one with the japanese switch market. The first one selled 3m+ copies global. Just check for a third website if you want the game or a sale. You wont see any new square enix game at 19.99. + They strike gold with those kind of graphic, Triangle strategy, live a live and the first octopath traveler, i dont see them lowering anything.
Just be like me, if you want the game, catch it on sale, i never buy full price for anything.

Why does the size of the game matter?

Because this game game could be played on a atari 500 40 years ago lol , how can they justify such a high price for a retro game like this compared to the likes of AAA title game as resident evil 4 remake or even elden ring !

look at like this way if they sold 5000 copies on release at 49.99 = 249,950 ....but If they asked 19.99 affordable price then sold 15000 copies = 299,850 as a pick up & play chill game on pc & steam deck over the long run .

Good point C. , I to paid 21.00 for octopath traveller's 1 on a different website just resonantly & I will do the same thing with octopath travellers 2 in a year or two .

You pay for the content, technology and entertainment.

Not for how big in gigabytes the game is, sometimes these files could just mean they didn't refactor the size of the game, or how badly the performance is, maybe some leftover files they forgot to remove, depends a lot.

yes exactly I will fork out the money when they make AAA title game that justify that asking price , Don't get me wrong If you are willing to spend that much i'm not stopping you or others who think that it's good value ...that's up to the individual

This is as an absurd a take as I've read in a long, long time. Oh and BTW, you were never playing a 3-6 GB game on an Atari 5200 or a NES, or SNES, Playstation, Playstation 2 - really wasn't until the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 days did you start to see games in the 3-6 GB range.

yes I played FFVII on Playstation 1 that came with 3 cd-rom disc's , granted 3 Gb game back then was epic amount of data & did sell for £49.99 on release , Asking 49.99 for 3-6 Gb new retro octopath travellrs II game In 2023 seems V/expensive compared to AAA 30 Gb -100 Gb data games title's on today's market.

Price being tied to file size makes ZERO sense. Also, you don't take into account how much more it costs now to develop, publish, market and release a game than it did in the days of Final Fantasy VII (which was about 1.3 GB by the way.) This is evidenced by the rising costs of your 40-100GB games increasingly common for them to cost $69.99.

Ultimately it's your choice if you want to use file size as to whether you think a game is "worth it" or expensive. I think you're going to miss out on some pretty great games.

Thanks for reply , so let me get this straight your telling me that a game 3gb-6bg cost's the same amount of money to produce as a 60gb game ? for example octopath traveller II vs Resident evil 4 remake = same production cost ?
Both games are the same price on steam 49.99 , I will pay 49.99 for RE4 remake but not for octopath cash grab but best of luck to everyone who wishes to though I hope it's epic

The exact same amount? I don't know. But I bet it's a bit closer than you would think. Take into consideration RE 4 is a remake, i.e. they are are not writing/designing a game from scratch. While yes, Octopath Traveller II is a sequel and likely uses the same engine, it is a new game. Now, I do concede that assets can be expensive but again - it's a remake, not a new game from the ground up. Graphically, likely yes but not design and writing. Lastly, given your calling Octopath Traveller II a "cash grab" your mind is well made up - and that's entirely fine. Vote with your wallet. I just find the determination based on file size alone one that seems self-prohibitive and short-sighted to me. But gain, your call my friend! :)

The same, no. But size doesn't dictate work, either. It's not significantly more work to have double the polygons for any given asset, most of that is the computer doing the work at the render stage. And games are far more than just graphics, there's mechanics, lore, script, voice acting, music, etc etc. Most of this isn't going to significantly increase the size --- a large script vs a small one will take up only a piddly amount more, and even voice acting and music don't take up THAT much relative space.

Really, in general what usually takes up the most space is full motion video - take FFXIII for instance, game takes up 50 GB, of which 40 GB is movies....though, granted, this is somewhat deceptive as there's movie for both Japanese and English, bur I imagine a lot of games are similar. That's a lot of space for JUST the movies.

I myself will not spend 49.99 on a 16 bit style mobile game , however I may pick It up 1 or 2 year's from now for 20.00 from a different web site other than steam .
