ps5 controller not working on game pass version

sorry to bother people here, but i can't find any support for this issue anywhere else. i'm trying out the game pass version and i cannot get my ps5 controller to work. i've tried both ps and simulated xbox controllers with ds4windows and get no response with those. i've inserted octopath into steam and tried steam's controller support, which if i do that, only the start button works. the controller works just fine with my other gamepass games.

keyboard and mouse support in this game is pretty annoying, so any other ideas i haven't thought of would be greatly appreciated.

microsoft really needs to figure out their controller support if they're gonna be a gaming console INSIDE of windows. it's frankly a bit embarrassing at this point.
