Can you swap out the first character you pick ?
In Octopath Traveller 1, the first character you pick is locked in your group until you have finished his/her chapter 4. It was really annoying if you planned to do each chapter 1, then each chapter 2 and so on.

Is it the same for this sequel?

Sometimes you wonder if the devs play their own game...

If you REALLY want to, you can edit your save file to 'unlock' the first character,.

I'm sure they did and i fail to see it as a problem.

There's no story or gameplay reason why the main character should be locked (he also ends up overleveled) and it's annoying when you want to prepare your 8 characters early for the final fight, and it constantly limits your team build (or at least until you complete the last chapter).

If you're 'preparing for the final fight' you will have already done your main character's story and can freely take them out.

What I mean is since you need two teams of four for the final fight of OT1 (I don't really know about OT2), I would have wanted to be able to freely switch out the first character so I can play the two teams interchangeably. It might have not bothered you but it was annoying for me and I can also attest for some other people. There’s no point in locking the hero in the first place.

At least it's now possible to swap out after finishing the protagonist's main story...

the way im handling the "preparing for the final fight" thing is i picked 4 of the starting characters and thats my party for their story for ALL 4 of them, then ill pick up the other 4 and play their 4 stories together, then do the co-op stories. im finding this helps with the overpowered thing that tends to happen to your main protag
