does the idea of burning them with fire help?
(for anyone else, they're in the Desert region)
Is this an area within the game that is necessary for you to go through or for you to continue on within the story?
not exactly sure how severe your arachnophobia is, but in my experience it really shouldn't cause any problems, sure the enemies are designed like spiders but they're not skittering anywhere, mainly standing still with a fancy attack animation or two, i'd hate (and im sure you would too) for something like this to hold you back from enjoying a wonderfully beautiful game...
So, I've only encountered them within the deserts of Ku, which is 2 map screens on the way to the city of Ku, which is the location for Hikari's final chapter. I think they might also be in the Tranquil Grotto (can't remember) but that's not required to beat the game - though it's the location to a nice sidequest involving 2 characters. Ku is a required area, so you'll have to go through those 2 desert maps. With Osvald's "Evasive Maneuvers" equipped (reduces rate of random encounters) you can probably make it through each screen with only 1 random encounter. This would minimize those odds (they're not in every random encounter) though, there's of course still a chance. I would recommend having someone else complete those areas if you can, just have them walk through the areas, save once you get to the next area, and buy them a slice of pizza as thanks. There's fast travel in the game, so once you get to the city beyond there's not any need to go through there again for required bits (though there is for the Tranquil Grotta, AKA sidequest stuff).
(As an aside, I think many people don't understand the difference between a "fear of" something and a "phobia." Severe phobias to something can cause a person's body to go into an uncontrollable acute "fight or flight" stress response, through no choice of their own. It sounds like that's what you might have. It's none of my business, but I've known people with a similar condition - with different stimuli than spiders - and they've been able to have a markedly better response with treatment. Just something to consider).
Then just unleash your strongest attacks to get through them as fast as you can. You'll have no idea what you're fighting. But that'll be the point.
Thank you for this and your previous answers to my question. And for offering options and alternatives to being able to play the game. Regardless of my phobia and the treatment I receive for it, games with Spiders are not for me. It's a beautiful game and I'd love to give it a try, but for me, the risk isn't worth the reward.
If I'm able to have someone get through those areas for me, I'll keep this post handy so I know where they are, and that person can just run through it for me. But until then, the game will be on my wishlist and be admired from afar :)
Because phobias are irrationnal fears.
