Finished all main chapters... Now what?

So I finished all the characters chapters. No cutscene or anything, I thought there would at least be some message. Is there any chapter to tie everything together and bring the story to an end, or is it now really just a matter of finding secret jobs, doing side quests and trying to beat the post game dungeon? Or am I missing something here?
I did not do all the crossed path quests yet. Will anything happen story-wise once I did all them or are they completely optional?

And after you do the finale, there is an additional superboss. Won't say much about it other than it is THE hardest fight in the game.

Though can you actually unlock it way earlier. The only prerequisites are having eveyone, having the ship (to get there) and three other sidequests.

Do I understand that correctly, you finish the chapters of your main char and 3 (main) companions and nothing happens? The stories don't somehow come together or you don't have a main goal/ enemie to complete/ defeat to finish th game?

So I have to complete all chapters, OF ALL 8 chars and do all crosspaths to see any ending?

Uh...yeah? Why are you surprised? Game is called Octopath Traveler, not Quadrapath.
