My characters feel rather weak around level 20 or so.
Is there a way to farm equipment, or do I always have to purchase it?

I pickpocketed and/or found all of my equipment. I never purchased any equipment in my first playthrough.
you can steal or mug someone. There is a way to be broken early game but some people probably just complain it will make the game too easy. Like for example:
1. Get level 20 especially your merchant and hunter.
2. Capture Light revenant with the help of hired help
Now u have broken 6-9k light area dmg to wipe opponent entire field. But yeah if u just start the game it feel like the game so hard. But if u understand deep into the game. It is actually easy. A lot of things can be exploitable to break the game.

Equipment, sub job and passives matter more than levels in this game.

1. Get Cleric 100% run passive
2. Get Scholar's encounter reduction passive
3. Explore high level dungeons for treasure chests (running from all battles) to get uber gear

Alternatively, have Ozvald/Throne on your main team and mug/steal items from npcs

Evil Ward isn't 100%. I've definitely gotten stuck with it on.

Evil Ward IS 100% run chance, you are wrong.
What it won't do is stop the enemy from potentially getting ambush/surprise attacks which you would have to absorb before you can run.

Leaning into the systems available, I have felt overpowered the entire game. Started with Osvald and went exploring. Gave him thief, and got the flee passive. Stealing in every town and exploring high level dungeons helps a lot. I have 60 hours and have not even started most characters 2nd chapter. Giving Hikari the counterattack move and just defending rolls through most encounters, including his challenges.

No it's not, I've had it on when I went into a much higher level area and couldn't run.

You are wrong, and you are mis-remembering.
You will not be able to re-produce what you claim.
If evil ward is equipped by an active party member you will be able to run 100% of the time, regardless of any other factors.

Won't stop surprise attacks though, where your party gets attacked first round THEN gets a chance to run.

EDIT: I also believe the person that has it equipped needs to still be alive... If they get KO'd I think the 100% run chance goes away for that battle.

You're the one being wrong. Literally just happened to me, right here, right now. Area level 45 and my characters were lvl 18/42/48/65 and Evil Ward was on Temenos, lvl 65. And yes, he was alive. I'm guessing it's because of my lvl 18 character, because it didn't happen before when I had higher leveled characters on my party.

So yeah, it definitely can happen.
