save file has disappeared?

as the title suggests.... my pc crashed before. when i restarted and loaded up the game, the save file is just completely gone? it said something about it being corrupt and just deleted it?

devastating really, was loving the game, is there anything at all i can do to get it back?

As far as I know. Sadly there doesn’t appear to be. I contacted square enix support and everything. They said nothing could be done.

I actually ended up requesting a refund from steam, informing them of the problem and the fact that I had contacted square enix directly. And despite my 40ish hours playtime. They actually did honour the refund request.

For me I won’t be able to play this again anytime soon and honestly I’d want to be sure this issue was resolved before I did anyway.

Do Square Enix know what causes this problem? It happened to me (90+ hours played) and many other players, too. I'm willing to start over but what's the point of playing a game that can delete your progress at any time for no apparent reason...

Yeah this game hates saves. Tried the demo and then my saves just disappeared

They didn’t say what causes it. And they had no fix on hand. And yeah I completely agree with you, I can’t be bothered playing it again only to discover my saves are gone. Pretty annoying.

I have recommended to friends playing it now to back up their save file at the end of each play session. It’s really all you can do I guess.

I’m surprised this issue hasn’t gotten more attention. Because it’s happened to plenty of people and it’s not a small bug. It’s a very very severe bug.

If your cloud data hasn't already been overwritten by the corrupt save, or by creating a new save, then you can try downloading your save from the cloud and manually putting it back into the local save path.

I think your pc crashed exactly the moment your game was saving. Unfortunate timing but there is nothing Square Enix can do about it. You should try to investigate why your computer crashed. Thats something that shouldnt happen in the first place.

Yes agree. But it does happen. And for example, there could be a power outage at the time of saving.

This is not a thing I have ever experienced in any other game ever. So it is specific to how this game saves.

There is a lack of resilience here, and the fact it’s happened to so many people shows there is an issue that needs to be addressed.

However, agree that obviously the developer can’t be blamed for one’s pc crashing.

Sucks but it happens. Try the cloud chevy linked, otherwise you'd need to restart or ask around for a half finished file to continue off. Won't be the same but better than nothing

I've had occasional crashes/bluescreens while playing other games, too. None of these games felt the need to terminate the entire saved files including Steam Cloud. Only Octopath Traveler did. The error is clearly on the part of Square Enix. How they're not adressing or trying to fix this is beyond me.

In fact, in terms of coding, there’s actually a number of well established, reasonably simple methods to prevent this happening. Usually it is a case of, there is little you can do to recover the progress since your last save, but there is really no excuse for absolutely wiping everything.
