Here is a map showing you your character selection: https://i.redd.it/armd7rx51yn91.jpg
As you can see the world is split more or less on 2 continent (with a few islands)
One new feature is you will be able to travel by boat and some area will be accessible only with this mode of transportation (when you get your own boat).
There will also be a day/night cycle which you can change with a simple push of a button if you want. Your path action will be different whether you are during day or night time. This will affect the game in many other ways, such as having different NPCs available on day and night time. Most likely different enemy group encounter as well. We know from the latest trailer (Temenos & Throne) that some ability will trigger on night time as well... Anyway this will probably be the biggest new feature of the game.
Each character also have a "Latent Power" which is something similar to limit breaks in FF games.
Here are the 8 Characters, again first letter of their name spelling Octopath:
Ochette, the Hunter (Toto'haha)
Castti, the Apothecary (Harborlands)
Throné, the Thief (Brightlands)
Osvald, the Scholar (Winterlands)
Partitio, the Merchant (Wildlands)
Agnea, the Dancer (Leaflands)
Temenos, the Cleric (Crestlands)
Hikari. the Warrior (Hinoeuma)
We still have Ochette and Castti to get confirmation, but all the daylight pathaction so far are the same as in the original game, ie: Throné can steal people, Hikari can challenge NPC to a duel, Agnea can Guide NPC etc.
Challenge should be more usefull or at least more fun than in the first game as you will learn special abilities from the NPC you challenge.
As for the night time path action here is what everyone gets:
Agnea -> Entreat: get items if you meet the level requirement.
Hikari -> Bribe: get information by paying money.
Osvald -> Mug: get items through battle
Partitio -> Hire: recruit NPC by paying money. Some NPC will have abilities such as giving discount when you purchase stuff. We don't know the full extent of this but we saw in a trailer a NPC giving 50% price discount at a 5% chance to trigger or something similar.
Throné -> Ambush: Knock down NPC by fighting them
Temenos -> Coerce: get information through battle
Ochette -> don't know yet how it's called but she will be able to recruit NPC.
Castti -> this hasn't been confirmed yet but this will most likely be a path action that knock down NPC.
Every basic job will be similar to what we had in the first game with a few changes. Each jobs enable the same weapon.
Edit: We will have sub job like in the first game, however we will obtain them differently. Fun part is we will be able to use the same job on everyone at the same time. If we want everyone in scholar job, no problem. However we will need to earn licenses to use those jobs. To get those license we will need to complete tasks (no more stupid free shrine). Getting multiple license of the same job will require more task to do for each one.
There will also be new advance jobs to get however we don't know yet how to get them and it seems we will be limited to only 1 license of those each. We've seen 4 of them throughout the trailers, they'll be different than in the first game.
Merchant gets Fire ability instead of Wind
Thief gets Dark ability instead of Fire
Dancer gets Wind instead of Dark.
Most of the physical skill will be different than the first game.
If i remember right from the warrior, his multi-hit ability is with sword weapon instead of spear.
Thief only Steal HP. Steal SP and share SP is gone now, she also has the same tool to debuff enemies (Shackle Foe and Armor Corrosive)
Merchant still has Hired Help ability which has 1 more payment option than in the first game.
Dancer still has Bewildering Grace skill.
We've seen Dancer using a kick ability that reduce shield on enemy no matter what their weakness is.
Study Foe Talent from Scholar seems to reveal at least 2 weakness instead of just 1 like in the first game.
Evasive Maneuvers is still a thing in this game, this is still the first support skill you'll get from the scholar job. Scholar job will providing an Exp Boost support skill instead of having it from an advance job, I assume the JP boost support skill might be available from another basic job as well but I haven't seen that yet.
As for what we know about the story, go check the trailers to have a general idea of what each characters are about.
I'm sure I'm missing a lot of details, but that's what comes to my mind.
Thank you soo very much! Cassti is who I want to start as, so cannot wait for info on her. Thanks for sharing all you know! I am sooo excited for this one to release. ♥
Castti's story is intriguing.
I'll start with Osvald, too much good stuff he has to start with...
1- Evasive Maneuvers
2- Study Foe (reveal weakness)
3- Exp bonus support ability
4- I anticipate Mug path action to be one of the best to get at night time.
