You mean the picture where main character 1 is about to kiss main character 2? Who is the love interest thats being stolen from? Those are two of the three characters you directly control. Now maybe the third main character has a love story either of them, I haven't gotten that far yet so can't say. But believe I can confidently say the player has enough control to decide where the romance will go.

I believe the misunderstanding is that the white, black haired guy in the promo pic of the game isnt playable, and certainly not a love interest for the girl wearing red.

Disagree, think OP assumed the one in the promo pic is the MC, but no, the MC is some guy that only shows up in some screenshot.

Therefore the OPs concerns are valid, if one assumes the MC is the one in the promo picture (Would make sense), then he is getting cheated on with the brown skinned guy (Actual MC) in some screenshot.
