The way it works is each time you go back to town with more money, and you buy permanent upgrades such as more and better potions, better starting weapons, etc.
So each time you get a little stronger, and you can make it a little further into the game, getting even more money for even more upgrades.
Or if you are just crazy good at the game, then you beat it in one try.
You should be almost max level just by playing on and off for about 10 hours total. Give or take based on your own skill level.
