Actually I think I was mistaken on when it doesn't save, it seems to occur after you are attacked, and doesn't save regardless if you win or not.
To elaborate on the autosaving philosophy for anyone reading: it would make sense to autosave after every action so that no progress is ever lost, but the little delays caused by writing to disk are too annoying. Saving after battles and on new maps seems to be the best balance.
Maybe you could also make it autosave after exiting the campaign map if there have been any actions since the last save (unless the slight delay on exit is a problem).
The update should be out this week.
