Or as someone else suggested there should be tools for repairing - they lower max durability (like sharpening stone for melee weapons and tools / needles for clothes etc). And possibility to restore max durability by using crafting materials (could be different amount of materials depending how used item is - how many max hp is needed to restore).
I confess that I am concerned about "living in the world" for a long period of time & being able to use my preferred items that require tool sets if they wear out eventually. I can't remember exactly, but I think I've got 800+ hrs in Long Dark & 500+ hrs in Green Hell.... and if I put this many hours in Fountain of Youth I will have no high level equipment left.
