Female pirates where a thing but pirates being outlaws they didnt have the strict social laws that nations had.
The only way a woman would be allowed on a ship would be as a passenger. This game is about an exploration expedition not a passenger ship voyage.
Having said all that, it would be possible for a woman posing as a man to get into the ships crew. It is not unknown but very very rare. Posing as a common deck hand would be very difficult as sailors had to have exceptional upper body strength to climb shrouds and raise sails by hand etc. But posing as one of the ships specialists would be possible, cook, carpenter for example, as long as she didnt look feminine and was very careful to hide appropriately. Also as an exploration voyage crewing rules wouldnt be as strict as those of a nations navy.
But then again this game isnt particularly realistic so why not female characters.
If minor things like this bother people so much then maybe these people should buy other games, not try to change existing niche games that are perfectly fine.
PS: I have enjoyed hundreds of hours in F4 and that game is by far a good/fair example to compare this game to
But... since the default option is a male character, and I anyways wouldn't play as a female, I couldn't care less if they added it.
Why not? If this option is required for someone to be immersed in the game and buy it, they should add it to boost their sales. Options never hurt. Especially in a single player game.
More money for devs > more content for this game / resources for making a new one. Simple as that... or maybe not?
Because they'd have to do all the vocals for the female counterpart. And I'm not sure if spending money and time on that would justify such implementation in the long run.
It's up to devs to decide if it's worth it for them or not (though I'm pretty much sure they already thought about this).
Playing as a woman in a WW2 frontline combat unit for example. If you are playing as the Soviets then an option for a woman pilot or sniper would make perfect sense. If you are playing as any other faction that option doesn't make sense and should be avoided.
So it is dependent upon the cultural norms of the time period or location, in this case I don't think it would be a good idea.
The idea of a survival game like this where you do play as a female character isn't something I am against.
In fact I think it's a great idea, especially if it goes all in on the circumstances of a woman attempting to survive on an isolated island full of predators.
Survival is a brutal concept in these scenarios, even for men.
But women would have other challenges to content with too, ones created by simple biological differences.
I'd love to play a survival game with a female character that takes those things into it's design, I think it would be a very interesting experience and as of right new few if any games out there have done this.
If not this game, I hope they get the motivation and interest to develop future historically themed survival games that would give us a female option, with out sacrificing the quality of the game or story. I don't want feminist or political messaging weaved into the game either. Because I really don't like that.
The only way I see a female as a playable option in this game, is if she came in on a different time line in the future, when the chances were increased for women to be traveling on ships or boats. But before there was any development on the islands. I like the idea of the woman starting her own unique story on an explorer treasure hunting ship or boat. Maybe she could even have some connection to the male character, from the original story, which could be her motivation for being there in the first place.
I also think a female option should naturally come with it's own set of challenges and actually make things even more challenging. A female should not be able to carry as much as a man. But maybe she could eventually tame a beast of burden to help her do some of heavier lifting. Pules and leverages are going to be her best friend. She'll have to get creative and inventive, if she wants to survive her own weaknesses. Maybe she will find somethings to help encourage her to develop her engineering skills. She may not have the upper body strength. But maybe there are somethings she can make to help her to over come any challenges she faces. Just like the male survivor. It may not get done today, but she will eventually find a way to over come it. Females should also come with their strengths. What she lacks in muscle and stamina, she makes up in stealth, except when it is that time of the month for her. So, she has to pay attention to that. I also think she should be better at taming animals and some animals wouldn't even see her as a threat unless she got too close. Being able to stealth up closer to animals and tame animals, should help improve her hunting abilities. Her arrows may not do as much damage, because she doesn't have the strength that a man has, with a bow. But she can certainly wound the animal and cause them to bleed out. If she wounds them enough, she could cause them to run off, leaving a blood trail that you can follow. Having a gun will always level the playing field. Women may not be natural born conquers. But we are survivors and I really would like to play a character that will be pushed to the test. I think the best example of this are the female settlers and homesteaders. Women didn't always have a man around or anyone. She often had to rely on herself and had to figure things out on her own. Maybe that could be a story right there. Maybe she was on a ship heading towards Jamestown or another colony. But it doesn't make it and she ends up stranded on some islands that was being colonized for a potential tobacco plantation. All along the island, there are clues that tell a story about what happened on that island.
Anyways, to summarize my thoughts. I'm just throwing them out there and seeing what takes shape. I've read all your comments. I do care about the story and the quality of the game. That should come first. If adding a female option is not right for this game. I would like to see more historically based survival games that will involve female options, with out it messing things up. I don't want things dumb down and don't want things done in a forced way, I really hope for something well thought out. I would like to see a game explore the idea of female characters not being equal to a male and allowing their natural weaknesses play a part in their survival experience. At least allow that to be an option. Who knows. Maybe in the future, we could also have the option of surviving as a kid between the ages 10-12. This could certainly take survival games to another level.
Playing Nora was awesome! I am a mother in real life and I lost my son through divorce. It was a mutual agreement, because my son really took after his dad. Plus, I was just barely surviving on my own. I struggle to find work because of child neglect and trauma. So, I surrendered him to his father. I fused that into Nora's character and turned her into a mama bear. I actually cried about her losing Ned. So, I downloaded a mod, that let be save Ned's life. We teamed up and tore up Boston trying to find our son. Well, we finally found Shaun and we did the only thing any responsible parent should do. We left him in his room to think about what he's done, before cancer finally took him away. I got my Ned back, thanks to mods. We could make another one.
Then there are strictly female characters that are also well beloved. I never felt odd playing Samus, Lara Croft, Aloy, or Chell. Hell in my head canon Revan is still a female to this day,
Basically if the game story is great the sex of the main character doesn't matter.
The issue is when the sex of the main character becomes more important than the story.
You really did NOT need to post that. People will look anyway and SPOIL it for them!
If you see something marked as spoilers and you reveal it and get spoiled...........you really have no one to blame but yourself.
