How do you get/craft saltpeter?

This game is lousy at directing you on how and where to get certain items. I googled this and got nothing.

Edit: I found the saltpeter pit in the crafting menu. New items are supposed to show when you unlock them. This one didn't.

Now I need to figure out how to get an animal carcass to my saltpeter pit. You can't transport them on boats I don't think. Am I really supposed to carry an animal carcass across an island back to my base?

there are corpses you can carry in your inventory. Dorado are generally my choice for saltpeter since they're abundant and go three for one in value. There's no reason to bother with larger animals, though if you are using them going to use them, build a saltpeter pit near hunting/trapping grounds rather than at your base.
