Some prepared dried meats like pemmican can last years. Pemmican is also wicked tasty, and quite healthy.
Probably true. I certainly don't know. But if I am reading the OP correctly it's not about reality but about the way you get it so late in the game that you would reasonably expect it to be an upgrade from something you get early on. Is it better in terms of nutrition in the game or not? If it's higher in nutrition, created faster or in larger quantities and easier to source materials then it's probably an upgrade in those ways but not in storage.
Personally I found food decay to be onerous so I didn't get into the finer details of food production at all.
This makes sense. It's not encouraging in games to get late game features that play weaker than earlier ones. What's the point then? In this case though it may be that smoking is meant for a reasonably preserved alternative to dried foods but with higher nutrition content. Something in between regular and dried foods, for long but not super long excursions. Maybe to run around the islands for a while while also carrying some dried stuff as last measure. In that case. one may argue that dried stuff appears earlier as we need to start island hopping, etc. Later, a more nutritious and reasonably well preserved alternative comes, best of both worlds perhaps. I don't have it yet, so Ill decide in due time.
The nutritional value IS higher for the smoked food but that is the only benefit. It takes longer to craft and does not last as long in storage.
I too get stuck in this trap but I don't preserve stuff. I throw everything in the storage and come back at some later date and find I am now the proud owner of 475 rotten food items. Such joy. That's why I stopped caring about food and just started making it as needed. Coconuts and a bit of cooked meat I think was my diet.
