Tegu spawn points within trap radius
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3260819316
How traps work is the radius has to cover the spawn points of what you are trying to trap. so after you place one open the map mouse over the trap icon and see what spawn points are covered. You can move it to another location to adjust and capture as many spawn points as possible within the traps radius. Once its placed the menu will show you what animals are available to trap and what bait is needed. As each spawn point triggers in game (probably on a timer) it will spawn as a carcass at the trap. So it takes the traps as long to fill up as the spawn points take to trigger in game. In the second pic shows 9 traps covering 5 spawn points for Tegu. The traps take 3-4 days to fill up. Don't wait too long or the carcasses will decay. You don't have to wait for them to fill up you can just collect whatever traps are full and re-bait them keeping a sort of ongoing rotation. More traps don't mean faster trapping spawn points have set timers. It just means you wont have to go back for a few days and they will be mostly or all full. I found a max of 12 traps seems to be the threshold between when they are all full and the carcasses start decaying and disappearing. 9 traps seems to be a good balanced number. But it also depends on the animal. For example deer (on Silver Island) seem to spawn a bit slower than Tegu so I only set out 6 traps there and still takes about 3 days or more. Also I recommend keeping a couple of Saltpeter Pits nearby to dispose of the carcasses and a small box to keep a stock of bait in hand to re-bait the traps.
I suspect if this is so it's to save them on animations for the trapping itself.
