Can't use bone or obsidian knife as a cutter?

I must be missing something. Can you use the bone knife or obsidian knife as a replacement for a stone cutter. The stone ones wear out way too fast. I went through 3 of them harvesting a boar. I don't see the option to switch to bone or obsidian knife when a cutter is required. I have tried equipping the bone knife or leaving it in my inventory. I just dropped a few fish on the ground and there was no option to switch from stone cutter to bone knife.

You can use bone and obsidian. Usually I automatically use any cutter in my inventory. Yes the stone cutters don't last long I still have worn stone cutters laying on the ground all over the place from earlier in the game. Bone cutters would be best since there isn't much other use for bones, but obsidian is used for several other things so save it for better uses. At some point you will find a skinning skill book that will remove wear on cutters used for skinning so they will last a very long time. They still wear on things like the few harvested plants they are needed for.

I just updated my post. My bone knife isn't an option when harvesting dropped fish. Only the stone cutter.

I have quite a few obsidian. Maybe I will try crafting an obsidian knife.

I remember having the bone knife in my inventory when I was harvesting boar earlier and it wasn't an option for that either.

Well now I am going to test that to be honest I've never really checked to see what cutter is being used for Dorado fish and Ive skinned a lot of them. But I carry a Seaman's Dagger for skinning (since I have the no wear perk) and obsidian knife for backup. I also carry two copper axes at all times.

My bone knife isn't showing up as an option. Maybe the developer can elaborate?

Ok so I just killed and skinned a Buffalo and a Tegu I had the option of using Bone Knife or Seaman's Dagger. But here's the catch, it will say something like "No Tool Needed" and not show any cutter options until you have selected how many of each resource you want to harvest from the animal, i.e. 3/3 bones, 4/4 skins, etc.

I use bone knifes for everything cutter related, because I find them to be very resource efficient. I have no idea why you are not getting the option to.

I'm aware of that mechanic. After selecting the number of items to harvest, I scroll down to the tool and the stone cutter is the only option. This is weird.

Have you actually crafted the knife? or do you have just the knife blade? You need to combine it with a short handle to have a working knife, goes for bone, obsidian and all above

I tried putting the bone knife in the 1st weapon slot. Then I moved it back to the 3rd slot. Now it shows up as an option when I was harvesting a snake. I don't think that was a needed step to make this work? I'm on day 30 and I have had the bone knife for quite a while now. It has never showed as an option before.

It doesn't need to be in any slot, it can just be in your inventory.

It doesn't need to be in any slot, it can just be in your inventory.

Well, it was a bug then. Had it in my inventory for quite a while before I stored it because I couldn't use it for anything.

Did you finish crafting it together with the short handle? Just the knife blade is not enough to use it. Just to be sure.
