you can figure out its craftable and/or repairable 3 different ways
You're gonna need copper to make an improved tanning station so you can make leather.
1. says like 1 day remaining. instantly deposit it into a chest, or you'll lose it entirely.
Now that your backpack is deposited, read the rest of this comment before screwing around.
The Leather backpack is by far one of the best starting items, including the naval coat, which stops the sunlight stuff you probably are annoyed by now.
The leather backpack is only repairable with leather. how do you get leather?
Step by Step. Guide right here.
1. Find a boar/pig that drops Fresh Hide. (or whatever its called, Fresh Something.) Not Animal Skin, animal skins are uselsss. only fresh hides will work.
2. Build the thing that looks like its got a skin streteched out, the Skin Drying rack.
3. Build the Tanner Bowl Bench thing.
4. Fill tanner with water.
5. Process your fresh hide into processed hide or something...
6. Place this product on the Drying Rack.
7. Wait by jumping into a bed, staring at the sun getting sunburn, or being an idiot in some other way not described here via waiting.
8. Grab the now finished skin from the Skin Rack Thing.
9. This hide/object can now be made into leather or something similar being able to repair the items.
10. press R to repair after hovering over the item, easier to do in inventory.
11. Congrats you read this comment, and fixed your stuff.
We'll add the possibility of turning this indicator off in one of the future updates.
You won't lose it if it goes down to 0 durability. It just unequips itself, you can repair it normally.
Also, the second stage of tanner, which you need to make leather, requires copper, which you won't get until you leave the first island and go to the Buffalo region.
OP, try taking off the bag when you don't need it - I believe it does not degrade unless you're actually wearing it. That'll extend its life. You can also make an Animal Hide Bag with just the first level of the tanning bench that only has 6 less points of weight. If you run out of your backpack before you can make leather, this bag is a great replacement temporarily.
I find that it is best to make the bag one step down with dried hides if you can't get all that done in time. Just use that one while you finish up the progression to leather, It holds a little less but it's not too bad of a downgrade.
If you want some advice, just give up on the backpack for now. The games intention is to only provide it in the beginning, and then take it away for most of the game. Which is a questionable decision, but that's what it is.
I found being pushed so much towards exploring the next regions just to get the damn materials needed to repair starting gear is a major fun-killer, so better just ignore it, throw or stow away the backpack and play the game as if you start with nothing.
Yes you can repair it. However its T2 items that you need and cant get until you get into the 2nd set of islands progression portion.
However you CAN build a backpack that is just below that one on your first island. Kill some Boars, Peccaries or Jackals, get raw leather, tan it on a tanning rack and you can make a level 2 backpack that is only a few KG less weight than the leather one (which is next in progression scale) you get from the ship.
