How to craft a carpenter's workbench

Hi I'm struggling with crafting a carpenters workbench. it says i need a common log, however common log has no option of adding to inventory, so how do I get the log into my inventory so it shows as an ingredient in the craft inventory. I have in next to workbench, no luck. I can carry it on my shoulder but can't craft that way. I am clearly missing something. thanks

You put a common log on your shoulder, come close to the Carpentry Workbench, and press E to add it: https://imgur.com/a/FGGU2Hw
