You're only limited by your imagination and effort. Put your base where you want, you can make it work if you really want a base in a specific place. It's up to you what you want out of the game, what does it matter what anyone else prefers? It's a single player survival game, do what you want to do.
1) Access to the sea for bringing in resources via ship
2) Access to resources locally (perhaps with a priority on Long Sticks and Wide Leaves)
3) (not as big a deal) No aggressive animal spawns within the base perimeter.
The cove meets these requirements. I've seen people build at the mouth of the cove, but I prefer the end of the cove for closer Jungle access. It still has a reasonably close date palm for juicers.
It is technically possible to build anywhere, but you are trading quality of life for aesthetics. You will have to either travel further with cart to collect resources locally or do painful transfers from ship to cart at your dock and then drag everything inland to your base (if you aren't building on the coast).
The cove is a beautiful location to build, but after a while you do get sick of the monotony. I thought about relocating to Silver Island, but that place is worse for access to resources. Same with the Iron Island grotto.
Next time I restart (which won't be for a while), I'll probably build somewhere coastal away from the starting beach or the cove, just for a change in scenery.
hope island and silver island are my favs so far... whoever thought building bases on extremely small spaces was clearly not realizing noone is going to do that, since litterly resources are annoying... to haul...
ur ship holds 600...
ur most highest tier crate? that looks exactly like the one on the ship? 100?
ur cart? 160?
ur inventory? 82 without going slow.
without the best inventory bag... or any bag for that matter. 35. like waht?
I'm sry but if they wanted me to build bases, they shoulda gave me like a thousand each on all those stats... and then i would probably stay in 1 place... or bother making a big base.
whats the entire point of making a big base? theirs no furinture decor, or anything like that.
its not like we have paintings or random objects we can put in our houses... sinks/toliets/weeirdness...
the entire base, is just a giant warehouse to me...
and random crafting tables everywhere and a bed inside a room.
To be honest I just built a 1 x 1 shack to have a bed in it in my base. The rest of it was outside machines and storage crates, with the fire under a canopy and junk piles. Looked like complete trash.
This is the optimal way of playing. 'How can I get resources to my crafting machines?' is the only real consideration in base location.
In a few games, base building is crucial, such as in Factorio, where it's necessary for Tower Defense, or in Icarus, where it's essential for protection against the weather. Even in these cases, the base can be quite basic in appearance.
Certain games attempt to encourage players to create attractive bases. They do this by awarding "beauty points" for placing decorative items like a comfortable armchair or a high-quality fireplace. These points, in turn, enhance morale and thus offer an in-game advantage. Grounded is a notable example of this, and Rimworld could be considered as well. However, even in these games, the concept of beauty is quite subjective. The game isn't assessing your Feng Shui skills. Simply placing five beds with silk linens can suffice.
