can you not sail back to the island of birds?

kinda set up a bunch of stuff there, plus ... I didn't make a bow before I left for buffalo region. Can't I sail back 'home'?

you can sail to any previous location

If you didn't set up a dock you won't be able to fast travel directly back to any island (including the Island of Hope). What you can do is sail to Bird Region and then manually sail back to your base.

It's usually a good idea to carry at least 4 building kits and some stone in your ship storage whenever travelling to a new island to build a dock for this reason. Remember to make the dock in deep enough water by using foundation pier so that the fast travel works. Also make sure the dock isn't blocked by carts or other objects which can also prevent fast travel.

Thanks all, I finally got it sorted. Man, there are some things that are just so opaque about this game. How would I know the random blue compass is the trigger for going back to a known area?

I kinda like how the game tells you next to nothing. imo, it increases the immersion in the game

I don't mind things like the plants/animals etc, but that is a game mechanic and I tend to not be too intuitive around game design assumptions.
