It's usually a good idea to carry at least 4 building kits and some stone in your ship storage whenever travelling to a new island to build a dock for this reason. Remember to make the dock in deep enough water by using foundation pier so that the fast travel works. Also make sure the dock isn't blocked by carts or other objects which can also prevent fast travel.
I kinda like how the game tells you next to nothing. imo, it increases the immersion in the game
I don't mind things like the plants/animals etc, but that is a game mechanic and I tend to not be too intuitive around game design assumptions.
