How to save in a different slot other than 1 please

You have to start a new game.
You can´t switch the save game slot in a current game. Or may be by manipulating the save game files - but i wouldn´t recommend.

I believe the game uses basically an ironman mode. You can save 4 different games but you can't save different game states. Just like the save system in Subnuatica. You could in theory move the save files from one to a different save slot though in the files.

Yes I hear you. Would be handy to have the option to load game. Will look into the saves directory. I alway seem to have to copy out saves manually these days. cheers

You can copy it to any location and back it up.
We can handle any crash

The game really does need more save game options. Ironman single game save for those that want it and a manual save and load system (with multiple slots for the same playthrough) for those that want to play that way etc.
More options is always better
