If the game does well, maybe they'll invest on more players on multiplayer, who knows, we also don't have much details yet
While 4P won't be a thing for DD Gaiden, even with other 4P brawlers around, it won't be a deal breaker for me. FnR has Local 3P and is often regarded as a great game for example.
But yeah, let's wait for now, Mayhem Brawler started as a 3P game (because it only had 3 characters to pick at launch though), and it's a 4P one now, maybe things can change in the future
Having said that, it's good that this company is holding back at the moment, better to play safe after what was going on. If things go well, then they can update the game to be able to have more players on the same screen. Despite the amount of characters, there has to be a good reason why it's 2P local for now, they are thinking about online for a future update if possible, which is smart thinking considering how RCG2 went regarding this point.
I think TMNT SR really should have had dual screen support. 6 players is a good feature to have but having support for a second screen really could have helped with the screen space to keep things from getting cluttered.
Gaiden absolutely does not come from the same developers as River City Underground. That studio shut down, and Bannon Rudis went to work at WayForward. Double Dragon Gaiden is being developed by Secret Base Games out of Singapore. This all shows why it's important not to talk out of one's butt.
Have to admit that this response made me chuckle mildly.
Since the game puts emphasis on a tag system, and you have four characters available from the start, that means you have two couples to work with (a primary and a secondary character).
Unless you could select the same character, or you could omit the tag system somehow, there would be no way to start a fresh game with 4P like that. Not to mention some other technical limitations or hurdles like enemy scaling and such.
I'd like a 4P mode, but only if they manage to balance it well.
