Base Question
Do you have to build from scratch or can you claim and fortify an existing building? So many games have the free form base building but not many have the mechanics to claim an existing building.

You can build in an existing building. If that building has zombie spawns in or around it it doesn't seem to stop them respawning.

The large barn just to the north of the quarry (E10) and due south of trader 4 (E9) is an excellent zombie spawn free location in which to build. Just across the road from the barn is a very large flat open space where you could also build your own base if you want.

Coordinates are taken from Robo's interactive map.

I havent built here before. I'm using the barn whilst I establish myself and will ultimately build on the flat land opposite. I usually build close to water at the start. Water was an issue until I remembered rainfall collectors.

I think it's a superb spot close to some prime POIs.

I chose it just to reduce initial building load since I am expecting to be gathering slower initially until I get enough gear to be safe with the new zombies. I had a 40 day year but changed to 80 to give myself more time before summer kicks in

I went for 360 day year and left the horde event active.

Similar to you, I'm also using the barn so as I have no need to build until I am comfortable with the new enemies. Have got all the new weapons. From car boots and weapons trader.

Finding it a challenge to get mood stuff as I level up the skills. I always used to rely on the supermarket on the starter island. Just going to have a go at it now.

The ship has some mood stuff but not heaps .. usually get most of it from houses which is where the puppies like to play! can also get it from the fridges in large motel in H12

My actual play includes a base build from scratch in position F4/5. Mostly Zombie free, can only one zombie in one of the barns. The loot is good and an ore field is near. There is a car in front of a building and the trader for repair kits is not far away. A tank station is a little bit down the street with a few zombies and with food, oil and weapon-stuff. I like the place.
The barn with the large fenced yard in front of the iron mine is convienant. Lots of mushrooms, trees, sticks. I make the barn a large storage/crafting area.

Some cool little premade decorations in the yard. Plenty of room inside the yard for greenhouses and raising animals. Then I save up cement and make a cool house across the street in front of the mine in the flat area. Horde base goes down the road a ways near the bay where eventually I will put a fishing cabin when they add fishing.

I usually do not like to use premade buildings in survival games, but that one is just too cool and convenient. Right next to iron and car repair for early game. Aluminum mine right down the road, oil pumps right down the road. Lots of animals nearby down the hill a little past the trader. So much room along the fence line for smelters/log holders or whatever. And you can fit a ton of crate racks inside the barn. I use that little roofed area in the yard for a water/cooking area after putting foundations under it.
