I can understand it and really for the foundations and walls it is not complicated. But what's the point of having structures on the map and not being able to modify them to use them as a base?
Each survival has its methodology, but it´s intuitive and to do the basics it´s simple, then you can experiment and do more complex things after. But here you can't even roof the house with a simple structure and for me, is really terrible.
I respect it, but it doesn't seem right to me.
Thanks for the answer
Congratulations ;)
Sorry to necro an old post but I have to say I 100% agree. I am trying to build a fairly simple house 7 long and 6 wide to fit with the max 3 wall beams. I have build columns at the 3 wall mark (don't even get me started on the stupid "should I build a single column here or a double column or even a quad column?" thing, that is annoying as hell.) I built a double column places a 3 wide beam and built it fine, but farther down the room with the exact same configuration it wont let me build another 3 wide beam? WHY??? The construction in this game REALLLY needs to be simplified. ALOT.
When I first started playing NOS, the building system really frustrated me. Then I watched this guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR8-RXpDFD8
I found it really helpful. Since then I plan my builds, get columns and beams in place before adding anything else. Watching the vid might possibly change your opinion.
TBH, I think the building system in this game (apart from placing roof pieces) is possibly the best I've seen in a game and certainly does not need simplifying.
Yea after just deciding to use cheats to get building materials (my GOD it takes forever to build even taking a cart loaded with large inventory backpacks to cut down trees and come back. It gets REALLY tedious.) I found that alot of the problems I was having was getting vertical beams lined up with other vertical beams especially across 3 and 4 gap distances. It's kind of a bummer there is no mechanic to be able to see the OTHER end of where the beam is trying to place so you can check and see if there is a gap you need to fill with a vertical beam to make the connection. Other than that after spending a few hours at it, i've gotten better, but still think it's a bit needlessly tedious for single player, obviously alot simpler in multiplayer as you have more people doing various jobs to make things easier.
- each foundation has four snap points for pillars
- beams only span between the pillars on the number of foundations equal to their length (a pillar on an adjacent foundation won't ptovide any support)
- wall panels must be supported by a beam
- roof panels must have their lower edge resting on a beam
It is pretty straight forward.
Just like everything else in this game I would suspect that the dev has just picked up an out-of-the-box building system to include in the game - it's not something he has developed the logic for.
You actually don't need to build a base. On my current save, the character is using a large barn where no enemies spawn.
Don't enemies spawn very close to that area?
Yea the base building thing is usually fun for me, and i'd imagine after some updates and smoothing out of the process it will probably be better. But in the case of building it right now definitely seems more multiplayer based. Maybe some better balancing of resources needed or obtaining resources for single player games in the future. <shrug>
In any case your idea of building up an already existing structure has it's appeal, and i'm almost certain the farm across the road from me has no spawns in it so maybe in future it might be feasible. Currently my main base and storage house are across the road from it. On Horde night I go across the road, get on the barn with a scaffolding, have plenty of ammo and/or arrows with me, and just shoot them as I can see them till they are gone. I have the game set on fairly easy settings for me as I want to be able to enjoy the world itself and what's in it rather than having to worry about being killed on a regular basis, but I do think I know that the zombie waves get harder and harder the longer your game goes. So perhaps in the future the barn may not be a workable idea anymore and i'm going to have to make a dedicated horde survival base to fight them from. It looks like it might be fun considering some of the traps and automatic weapons I can eventually unlock. :)
At this point i'd say it's not as hard as I originally thought, i'd just like there to be some kind of building view where I could keep something snapped to a spot and still be able to move around or see where the end of it is to see if that's causing the issue. It seems like a few times i've gotten the "no support...etc" message and thought "ok I just need to build a closer support beam, checked the lineup, and it all looked good, just to get the same no support message again for some reason I just can identify.
