How do I clean 5 water in alum canteen?

I have five slots of dirty water in the canteen, I can put 3 (max) on the fire to clean. When I take the now clean (3) water and put it into the canteen the 2 dirty water remaining makes it all dirty again. How do I clean 5 slots of water without contaminating it again?

With great difficulty.

You need additional plastic bottles to swap the water around (never drink from them just put water in and out only), or wait until you unlock the tech tree for water storage.

You could use water bottle like Sol mentioned or build a electric cooking station then you will have more than 3 slots to cook water.

Either 1 x 3 slot bottle and 1 x 2 slot bottle for the dirty water, or an extra canteen for dirty water.

I have decided to use the canteen at present to wash myself. Hope they change this as it is a bit silly to have the canteen early game and the ability to use it properly, late game.

Don’t do that, just make another canteen; one for dirty water and one for clean water.

I can't clean the water in the canteen. So clean water in the canteen won't work. It will always fill 5x dirty water. Can't add clean to, 2 x dirty water it all goes dirty.

Let me try this again:

Make two canteen.
Keep one canteen empty.
Keep one canteen filled with dirty water.

Make campfire; add pot.

Add three units of dirty water to pot; ignite.
Dirty water will become clean water.
Take empty canteen; fill three units of clean water; canteen is now partially-filled to 3 of 5.

Add remaining two units of dirty water to same pot; reignite if required.
Take partially-filled canteen and fill with two units of clean water.

Canteen is now complete with 5 of 5 units of clean water.

Other option is if your still just at cooking fires is to make a second one. place 3 dirty in one and 2 dirty in the other. cook & take all 5 out of the 2 fires.

Then you need two pots too, and that’s too many steps for a two step process lol.

For me, it was just SO much easier to make a 2nd campfire. The trader doesn't really want pots, and I found several when searching for food, so I didn't even have to make it myself.
