In the real world, cans would be expected to last usually a minimum of one year, but are known to last for up to multiple decades if stored correctly.
All food items (not just cans) need to scale with the time dilation options in the game, which is currently limited to "how many days in a year" but may in future (hopefully) also include "length of day in real time". This is a minimum requirement to make time dilation viable in the first place and not feel completely wrong.
The default length of time for a can lasting 40 days (1 year) seems like a reasonable minimum... but I agree it wouldn't hurt to extend it to double that or even triple. Fresh food seems about right in a lot of cases... 1-3 days or whatever, though potatoes for example can also last weeks or months if properly stored - as can a lot of other vegetables.
There's clearly room for adjusting the balance of many things, but remember early access is about implementing the main features and mechanics systems, and not necessarily fussing over the balance of said features or systems.
Hopefully this is something that can be easily tweaked though just to make the current experience a little more immersive and homogeneous.
this is only true if you set the game to 40 days is one year. It should scale with the actual days so have set your game. i play on 80 days so a can should last 80 days. but now its like t he op said. unrealistically fast spoil time
Figuring you find cans with ranges of expiration is also lends to more realism. I think most people are not seeing that 40 days is one year.. and face smashing against the obvious glass. " There must be something wrong with the game" Before thinking about how the game mechanics work over all with balance.
I would have more issue with herbs expiring in as fast as they do, considering with air drying them they can last nearly a year. Luckly they are so common that you never really run out of tea herbs.
Another issue is that cooked meals are even more annoying and (besides some recipes like sandwitch) are totally inferior to canned food. Its frustrating when you are preparing several meals for your group and the first wave is already rotting in your inventory while the last run is still in the pan. Additionally when you notice that canned food is more "healthy" and compared to the just made meals way more durable.
A solution could be making canned food wayyyyyyyyyy more durable and a bit less healthy than fresh meals. Kind of rare loot at pillaging. So you can store it as expedition reserves or so. Additionally you need to buff the stats of the self made food, too. The efford-gain ratio is clearly not in the fav of them, so why dont push the cooking stats worth by rewarding good cooks with better recipes, better stats on meals and/or faster cooking?
A bad cook can throw a junk of meat in water and let it boil. A 5 star cook could make a fine soup for gourmets and could add additional incrediences for better stats.
Basic broth: Water+meat.
upgraded broth: water+meat + ()
gourmet broth: water+meat+()+() (not at a campfire cookable because of the lacking 4. slot)
The () could get filled with vegetables or meat to increase Proteine or carbs.
Aditionally I really REALLY miss a cookbook. Please insert a function which will automatically writes down "researched" recipes which is linked to the cooking station.
An additional goodie could be that klicking on those recipes will autofill the station with the components from your backpack.
This would make cooking way more useful than it is now.
+10 thats a great idea
nice! +1
