Not sure if it's just me but when it comes to counting you have:

- Subnautica

- Subnautica: Below Zero (2)

- Subnautica (3)

You'll get a lot less posts like mine if you just number it properly instead of trying to bury Below Zero in the past.

No, most people never played Below Zero, it makes much more sense to call it Subnautica 2. So people know it's not a continuation of Below Zero.

Reasons people never played BZ aside, it's still a Subnautica game. So being that this is the third in the series it makes more sense for it to either have:

A. A title like BZ did that gives you an idea for the settings theme.
or
B. Just labeling it 3 for being the 3rd game in the series.

They arent burying it, below zero was never named subnautica 2. it was more of a dlc, this has been talked about by devs. the game is noticeably smaller and only half the depth.

Kingdom hearts doesn't number it's side games despite the fact that they are directly important to the story. That series isn't burying it's side games.

In fact, I struggle to think of any series that does skip a number to account for it's side games. Not to say it would be weird or wrong, but let's not go making baseless accusations on your meaningless assumptions.

BZ was originally gonna be a DLC but there was alot more stuff then intended so they made it its own game

Below zero is an expansion to the first game, or originally was supposed to be and the developers still regard it as one. This is subnautica 2

Below Zero is kinda like the Miles Morales of the Subnautica franchise, so it just counts as a spinoff.

For the same reason why Crysis 2 is not Crysis 3 despite Crysis Warhead being a separate game.
The devs even state in their website that Below Zero is a "stand-alone expansion to the story of Subnautica"
Expansion. Not a sequel.
