I think for the Red smoke gas it should add like a wobble effect like when your falling asleep but your still standing up you wobble left to right, and for the darkened vision you should go in and out of that for good effect like when your trying to keep your eyes opened when your feeling sleepy.
To break the illusion, try using grapple handles, crash doors and/or using puzzle pillars. Another way to break it is by having other specialists check your Grabpack.
