This apparently isn't the first time, as PM Studios also made DEEMO's physical copy incompatible with its DLC.
It's not a regional issue either since the English digital and Japanese digital are considered the same game (you can pull up the eShop information for either region with the DLC), but the English physical copy is a separate thing entirely that pulls up an error on the eShop.
