Game is cool, yeah I agree it maybe not so long or hard as previous games, but so much better in other ways
Yes, the game nails the 80's aesthetic, the pixel-art is lovely, and the sound/music are very well done.
But this is a game, and where it falls short is in its gameplay, the gameplay loop, mechanics, narrative/characters, feeling of progression, and replayability.
All 4 levels (yes only 4) play out IDENTICALLY, with the only change being that SOMETIMES the level will be flipped. But all you do is clear trees, find the dumpster, and slowly make your way towards the end of the level, destroying little greed portals as you make your way right (or left), before coming to a large portal that spits out larger hordes... you destroy that or collect whatever items they're blocking, then you move on.
I'm not complaining, because I think the price-point is right where it should be given the lack of content and general deficits the game has. But a game being fairly priced doesn't mean there aren't elements that just don't serve the game well. Personally, I think Kingdom Eighties feels like wasted potential. It feels more like a proof of concept, or an early access game (just because of how light on content the game is), rather than a full title... even a budget one.
Honestly, I'd recommend waiting for a sale before grabbing this... or until more content is released. There just isn't enough variety or meat on the bones.
psa. get baldur's gate 3.. it's reaaaaaly good
The only real complaint is that the game is too easy. You get more money than you know what to do with, and between the dumpster and mech you pretty much plow through portals with ease.
The mixtapes switch that up though. It goes back to the oldskool "besieged on both sides with dwindling hope for survival" of Kingdom of olde. The problem is that most people are too impatient to sit through the campaign.
Personally I like it for what it is. Plus the easter eggs are freaking awesome.
"Alright cool you did it... now just ... stay in the mall or delete your save.""
I liked New Lands but was frustrated with the slow moving boat means it takes forever to finish a land, and the other frustration was having to put coins in for your upgrades every few nights.
Loved Two Crowns as this fixed both of those issues and added split screen. Completed all levels on all difficulties in solo then did the same in co-op. The daily trial thing they released recently wasn't that great in my opinion, tried it a few times but don't really see the point of it.
Then comes Eighties. Like most have said, the aesthetics have been nailed, love the music. Although i do find it a bit tricky to differentiate between kids i've recruited and ones that are awaiting a coin, it's not as easy to spot as in previous games. My main gripe is the longevity, it is quite short and there doesn't seem to be as much replay value as there was with Two Crowns. Granted i don't know how much of this was down to DLC content in Two Crowns, i did purchase it before Norse expansion for what it's worth but not sure when Cursed Lands or Samurai were added. I've not tried mix-tape mode yet but i've never really been one for endless modes in games, seems a bit of a tacked on cop-out.
All i know is, i completed Eighties on normal the day of purchase, my wife gave up after two sessions and we immediately went back to Two Crowns which has been a staple game for the past two years. Whilst the co-op has contributed to this, we both still play it over and over in solo mode. We own it on iPad, Switch, PC and XBox.....that's how big a fan we are of it. Eighties does not come close in our opinion. Decent game, but Two Crowns still holds the.....'crown'
and yea, the hired kids look just like the unhired kids. vagrants in other titles have a lot more black, so they stand out way better
The fact than you can't play it with your wife though is a bit of a downgrade from previous games.
Games? Just one game, Two Crowns. New Lands and Classic are also solo player.
Honestly people need to stop seeing this as "the next game" with the same features. Each of the four games kind of does it's own thing. I still have a reason to turn on Classic and New Lands even though Two Crowns is technically "the better" game.
its much more like DLC than a standalone game though, and they at least priced it accordingly. its more a matter of disappointed expectations; it looks like a sequel, and it isnt.
