So the stamina bar is low? When the stamina level is low your players have no stamina, so they have to do hard workouts to get stamina back.
Both parameters - stamina and energy - should be at least over 85 for a good actual fitness level.

The schedule should have Basic Fitness training at least for the first week (i do 2 weeks).
Then, 1 day before a match you should focus on match preparation and have the team prepare for the opponent. The day after the match, just put recuperation for the first training session slot. 2nd slot can be left empty.
Make sure you monitor stamina levels during the match, make early substitutions if needed ( even in half-time), rotate players enough. These are just the basic concepts.
I assume that Playing style also affects how quickly stamina is drained during a match.
There are two bars, 1 for effort and 1 for skill. In theory high effort is draining stamina more quickly. Haven't tested enough to confirm it since i don't change playing style often.
Will training groups help at all? I cant seem to get my players fit
