How scary is this game?
I really enjoy the Holmes series. Been a long-time fan. But I'm worried this might be too scary for me. Can some people who have played it tell me what to expect? I'm not as much into horror...

Hey, I've played the game to completion. It is a horror based game being a Lovecraft themed story as its focused on the unknown, unexplained and 'otherworldly' influences. There are scenes that include murder, dead bodies and a bit of gore in the game. You will have times where you navigate the environment in the dark with a lantern or through misty/hard to see areas. You won't be chased and expected to sneak around. At the same time, there are daytime environments and you will majority play with both Holmes and Watson together (which I found comforting). I'm not a fan of horror games and I only found myself tense in certain areas but I overall really enjoyed the game.
I would classify this as a few steps down in scare factor from another Lovecraft horror/mystery game called Call of Cthulhu (2018).
Hope this helps :)

Thanks - any other thoughts from others? What kind of gore are we talking about?

Not that scary but definitely has the right vibe, even more so then the original 2006 game. As for gore, there's a few bits when you come across the aftermath of the cult's activities. Involves eels. I think it's about on the level of Testament of Sherlock Holmes for gore, more than Call of Cthulhu 2018 (which mostly focused on fish gore).

Ok. I need to finish Chapter One so I'll do that first then think about it.

The gore is pretty mild, even for my friend who kinda hates blood. But there is

"MILD SPOILER
one creepy doll which is pretty much the scariest part of the game. Its mostly editing and sound effects and no jump-scares

But otherwise its just a murder mystery / conspiracy / lovecraftian story game. More mystery, less horror

The original game is much more scary than this remake.

It's not really jumpscare horror or a lot of horror you see in big horror titles: it very much sticks to lovecraftian horrors of unexplained and maddening horrors of what reality really is, madness slowly setting in, and people doing bad things as a result of seeing the truth of reality. The most jumpscare-y horror is Heidi, and even then it's not really too terrifying. The biggest horror I felt was later in the game when Sherlock is suffering from a Cthulhu-induced break from reality and starts hallucinating someone dead on a cross talking to him, in a sequence where even you, the player, don't realize what parts are real or not, to the point where he almost gets killed until Watson steps in and saves his life. As another note, there are insanity puzzles that happen a few times in the game and they can be genuinely unnerving, especially the one with the ax blades.
