Some questions about continuity
First off, the Steam page says the game takes place in 1884, while the news post says it's 1882. Maybe not the biggest difference in the grand scheme of things, but still something that stood out to me, and I would appreciate clarification.

Second, and more importantly, is how this retcon affects two other games in the series: Jack the Ripper and Arsene Lupin (aka Nemesis). The events of the original game took place in 1894, which is between the other games as opposed to before them. A promotional video features an inventory item titled "a book from barnes," which implies that Baker Street's favorite bookseller is already in operation at this time, even though we saw him first setting up shop in Jack the Ripper, which takes place years after this. Additionally, the original game has Sherlock giving Barnes a particular book near the end of the storyline, which results in him losing his mind by the events of Nemesis.

If this remake takes place a decade before the original, and effectively replaces it in the timeline, that kind of throws the events of these other games out of whack.

Companies don't care about things like continuity anymore, it's just an alternate timeline and reinterpretation and anything goes

Aint that the truth.
And the frogs now got a brand new Sherlock to toy around with so expect lots of "reinterpreting" of the (original) stories.

You have to remember that the original The Awakened was starring an older Sherlock Holmes that had been working with Watson for a few years, while this remake is said to be their first case together. (On the subject, while Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's canon states their first case was A Study in Scarlet, the two fellows were really in their early twenties back then, so people who every now and then complain about seeing them so young must know that Sherlock didn't start getting a reputation as a consulting detective when he was already in his fourties)

Basically I think Chapter One marked the beginning of a new continuity, with the remake of The Awakened following in the timeline and all the previous games disjointed from said timeline until they get possibly remade. Consider them as "Universe A" and "Universe B", if you will.

To be honest the old games weren't perfect when it came to timeline and I noticed some mistakes in dates here and there, so if anything the possibility of the series being remade and expanded with new games in the future might also mean a better accuracy on that aspect.

The original games follows the timeline, the release of the games does not. As is quite normal.
Chronological Order:
Chapter one
SH vs Jack the Ripper
The Awakened
Crimes & Punishment
SH vs Arsène Lupin
Case of the Silver Earring
Testament of SH
Mystery of the Mummy
the Devil's Daughter

Chapter One is a reboot of the series. The old games as Nemesis, vs Jack The Ripper, Testament of SH, Crimes and Punishments and Devil's Daughter don't exist in the reboot so they can do remakes and new stories and make a new timeline.

The Awakened remake is rewritten so it can be a sequel to Chapter One. If you played the demo, there were some references to Chapter One :D
