I may be missing something myself, but there are at least two big things that contribute to your next run.
1. Achievements. Giving you more stats to allocate, more passives you can choose from and the points needed to select them, and some more consumables to start (this is on the smaller side, but it's still there). It'll depend on the achievement.
2. Your estate, where you can store legendary gear and manuals (abilities you can learn) that your next character can take out once they can access the estate. Any estate upgrades can persist between runs.
The Homestead also provides passive buffs, while allowing you to get legendary crafting materials early in the game. It also works like a shared inventory between characters from different runs.
Having to grind them up every time would be incredibly obnoxious.
I did not realize the mechanics would be so expansive and complex.
