How do you recruit Qu Wangyou (herbology sect)?

I already raised affection to 100, but she keeps saying 'People outside are unpredictable, I d rather stay in the herbology sect for the rest of my life'. How can I recruit her?

Thats not her Recruitment. That option gives you +50 Medical.
If you leave and come back there will be 5 new NPCS. Talk to Qu and she will ask you to cure all five.
If you cure all 5, Qu Wangyou will get her Upgraded Ultimate Move. If you fail she does not.

Once all 5 are cured or you fail, the Evil doctor will appear and start a fight.
Win the fight and you can choose to kill him (another fight) or let him live (He will attack you later)

Then you can recruit Qu Wangyou

To add onto that, you'll need some specific things to heal all 5 and it can be kind of a pain if you weren't expecting it. Either you or a party member needs: 8 strength, 50 sword, 800 mp, 50 toxicology, one piece of thunderstruck wood.

After that you'll have a fairly large battle so be prepared. It can be tough if you're low level.

Oh, thank you for the detailed information regarding this needs that you mentioned(8 strength, 50 sword, 800 mp, 50 toxicology), do I need to have at least one of each? Or as long as I have a member with one of all of those im fine? Also, if I do the fight and everything but I dont have one of those requirements, can I come back and complete it later? Or do I need to do all of that in one go?

You need everything, even if it's not necessary to have everything on a single character. After the fight you can't come back to this part of the quest (it'll become obvious why).

On the bright side, everyone will stay there in agonising pain without complaining for however many days you need to collect all the requisites.

Good to know. I already have everything other than the toxicology, is there any good way of raising it that hopefully does not reduce health and/or mp in the process? I already have 33 tox so I am fairly close

The least painful way is just recruiting Jiang Ziyan in Chuxiang.
It's either that, scarfing down bugs, or waiting until Miao Caidie can do her gu experiments on you, which tends to be way later in the game for me.

At this point my MC also had 33 points in toxicology, however I also had an unappraised internal arts book which I think I got from the waiter in the Lin'an inn.
I took the book to the book seller at the north-east side of the Lin'an market, quicksaved and then kept getting him to appraise it as it gave a different manual each time (and I was curious what the possible results were).
Eventually I got one that gave me toxicology points and an ability to poison enemies in combat which I kept so I could learn and level it to complete the quest.

I'm at 100 affection with her, but she won't join and she's always alone. I've come back to her several times at different hours of the day, but nobody else ever appears. Is there any particular requirement to have the 5 people appear to start her quest?

It's probably tied to level or fame, most events are, especially fame.

No idea then. Must be tied to some other quest, at a guess I'd say nine factions city quests, because that's roughly the point in the story I usually pick her up. Of course make sure to exhaust her dialog and max out her devotion and your benevolence, just to be sure.

Dialogue exhausted, maxed devotion, maxed benevolence. Regarding the nine sect quest, which one are you talking about? The one that wants you to destroy it? It hasn't triggered, I guess because I went from sect to sect to maximize my intake of good manuals. Now I was trying to get the Illusion Sword manual.

No it's the first interaction you usually get with the nine factions. They are causing trouble in each of the cities and you need to solve those problems. I don't know if it's related at all, that's just the point in the game I usually recruit her. Sounds like you are very very late game, so it could either be bugged, it could be that you've actually gone too far and missed it, or there could be some other quest blocking progress.

I've seen that last bit happen with the girl-monk at shifa temple, a quest had martial artists being captured by 9 factions and held at buddha temple, and even though she had absolutely nothing to do with that quest, she would not show up to do her breakthrough formation quest until I resolved it.

There are certainly still many bugs in this game, so that's an option too. For example, in my current run the game stopped tracking the confucius sect questline during the third quest, when I had to go to the Ice Prison. Luckily, I was still able to access the prison and complete the quest, but the tracking didn't recover, so I had to do it on my own.

Did you try bringing the Old White Hair Man from Nameless Village to visit her? That might trigger it.
