Fighting follows a rock-paper-scissors model with (melee, distance and magic) and there are different opponents. It also makes a difference if you fight one enemy or a group of them.
In my opinion, not dying and dealing some damage works for everything. So it is not necessary to go for melee/distance/magic or crit damage. More important is what keeps you alive. That is healing (magic broom, forest amulet or skull helmet, demon sword, bone staff) and reducing the damage you take through defense or stun (in particular against single enemy).
Healing, life steal or stun need to be triggered, so speed is very important (use dogs or pirates).
For magic units, I have a wizard with the Witch broom for party heal and another one with Magic Staff for secondary healing.
For range, the Ninja unit is very good with Gold Armor for increased stun proc. Take note that the Ninja attacks three times so you have 3 chances to proc stun. Also, the pirate hat is a good headgear since it also gives stun chance effect, but this is very hard to obtain.
If you want a pure stunner unit, you can get the Pirate on the Island. It has a stun passive and you can give it a Morningstar weapon, Pirate hat headgear and Gold Armor.
Good luck and enjoy!
