Enchanted Gem Puzzle mechanics

I basically stumbled my way through the enchanted gem puzzles up to the one found in Etzae, but that particular board made me realize I don't really know how the mechanics of the board game work.

How are "chains" between the gem origin points established? What do the fixed blocks do in terms of establishing these chains?

Honestly, Jeff; in for a penny, in for a pound. I should be allowed to torture answers out of NPCs. Deep truth, shmeep fruit. Just give me your loot and I'll be on my way.

There are some simple ones early in the game (especially in the Tower of Erudico). They are set up so you can trial and error and figure out the mechanics of how the blocks work.
