Really the sap gloves I think are meant as a last resort type weapon seeing as you already have two weapon slots by your waist, one over your shoulder, and two more large weapon slots on the backpack, not to mention all the extra one-hand weapons you can stuff in your backpack.
I've not noticed sluggish movement with them, personally so I have no comment there. If I had to name an issue I've had with them it's when I punch things I don't mean to and it takes durability off them.
Punching a regular person to death would take several punches yes, if you're using your bare hands that is, in this case you're wrapping your hand in metal and pointy bits that should deal quite a bit of damage to anything you punch. Brass knuckles while not a perfect comparison are still very lethal. Not to mention we're fighting the rotting undead, whose bones and flesh have decayed to the point where they can beheaded with one swing of a cleaver. At that level of decay I should be able to punch their face to pieces. Not that I want a gore system, I think that'd be too much work and might not fit in well with this game, but at least give me some good damage behind these punches.
I suppose they would work as a last resort but they just don't seem like a worthwhile last resort you know? I'm spending valuable resources on these things and they are more likely to break before I even get to use them due to accidentally registering damage from other things. And when a simple stab to the head is all that's needed to finish an enemy it's just unnecessary to waste time trying to punch them. Especially when the game limits your swings so much. I'm better off just bringing a spare cleaver or knife like always and using those because they're cheap, and more effective. And if I'm really so far up ♥♥♥♥ creek that I can't pull out my backpack and grab another weapon I don't really see the gloves doing anything to help that situation. They are too slow and too clunky to be an effective backup weapon even.
And the sluggish movement makes them even more of a dumb decision to bring, as you're not going to be as effective with your melee swings and more likely to put yourself in a 'oh ♥♥♥♥' situation where you would need a backup weapon to begin with. I've gotten grabbed multiple times because my melee attacks while the gloves are equipped refused to follow through, then I take them off and I'm back to chopping away like the Axeman.
I just think every weapon in this game should be usable, and certainly shouldn't inhibit the use of other weapons. Unless they see some kind of buff or something I doubt I'll ever craft the gloves again, I see them as nothing more than a waste of resources.
