Am I missing something?
I watched the first 5 minutes and it seems like Retribution is an immediate continuation of some previous beat that ended with you falling through a floor in a mission to get some blueprint.

I don't remember either the Part 1 or Aftershock ending like this - am I missing something or is it deliberate that you have no idea what's going on at the beginning?

its deliberate

It's so confusing. Even the story recap slideshow that plays in the beginning gives the impression that the hotel stuff is from a previous game.

I guess there's a story "in between chapters" that's surfaced in your notebook, but it's still extremely weird. You're thrown into a story with characters that you don't know but your character does, so it immediately creates dissonance - you're even asked by Father Carter in the first 5min to explain who's to blame for a mission going bad but you haven't actually met any of these characters.

I'm still not entirely convinced there isn't some dlc or webcomic or something that I'm missing because the alternative is that it's just really bad storytelling 💔

It's just bad story telling. Wait until you get to the political beats later on.

when does a sequel ever start exactly where the last instalment ended?? of course there has been stuff between the games, and quite honestly if you do dialogue correctly you find out what happened at the hotel so it fills in the blanks. like a lot of games do.

Yeah the part where you tell the priest which of the 3 guys screwed up the mission had me wondering what I missed. I played that entire introduction twice (2nd time after importing a save) and it didn't make any more sense the 2nd time thru either. Probably best to not pay too much attention to the story and just enjoy the gameplay.

its called a bridge - its the events between two games, shows or films. the events of the bridge aren't always clear to the viewers straight away but it is further explained.
in the case where you have to pick one of the three guys, either option works because all three screwed up the plans in their own way. by choosing any of them you get a different set of events that explains a portion of said bridge.

It might make for better storytelling if it was talked about during the intro. Certainly not from a 1st person VR perspective where you're supposed to draw from your own experience to communicate.

That's a fair argument, but it's still a fun game
