Stuck as wrong character/tag partner?

Playing Universe mode as The Undertaker and every tag match with Kane, I start as 'Taker but if I tag Kane in I get stuck as him, according to the controls, back on the Xbox controller swaps teammates but it's doing nothing. What am I doing wrong? Thanks
