Diver help
I give up, this character is just insanely ridiculous. I cannot for the life of me figure out what ranged weapons you're supposed to use with it. And no I'm not using the harpoon gun and bringing the Angler fish into melee range to charge me down to death, or the same with the little charging shark and narwhal creeps. I don't like that it yanks them closer. The 250% health is just so punishing. They just won't die, and I get rushed down on horde waves. I can't tell what weapon I should start with or focus with. I've tried everything offered, and even mixing and matching and still it's just not enough. I've full D5'd the whole cast before the DLC and the test 4 characters too (Baby, Vampire, ect). The Diver is worse than Jack for me. And I loathe Jack.

So anyone got any tips on what to do for Diver D5 on Abyss? Or crash landing too, either is fine. I am so very stuck... And realize I need help. And no I'm not going to mess with the difficulty sliders or hp or damage or any of that stuff. If you want to do that, fine, but i like the challenge of playing the game the way it was intended

the whole thread is unneeded then

the point of the character is it's a gimmick to teach you how the harpoon gun works

- you should have 1 harpoon and 5 melee weapons, upgrade the harpoon for 1 coin when you find one in the shop
-> shuriken is one of the harder ones to build, i suggest going for the others like knife/dagger first (precise tag to boost crit, dagger builds money..)
- buy crit, ignore the "hp regen for melee" mechanic because it's a joke (but you should still get melee), then you hit the stuff that you spear and the rest writes itself

harpoon gun is actually amazing for killing angler fish safely because it stuns/slows them (same for goblin sharks, mollusc spellcasters etc)

- buy tons of damage, play like a glass cannon style in at least the first 9-10 waves, make sure every angler you pull in gets killed immediately, along with everything else that's smaller

- make sure you get enough speed that you *can* run away from stuff when you need to
-> anything you drag up close to you should die immediately, if it doesn't just run away so you can spear and gather more stunned enemies to laugh at

once you get familiar with the harpoon mechanics you'll see big results from it, it's definitely not weak but it is different from standard brotato. some tips on that front:

- it's the only ranged weapon with a minimum range, so it won't shoot things up close to you. you want it to be constantly shooting at something useful.
-> think about the above (run away to gather more), you have to get "out to spear range" sometimes even though you're a melee character
-> when you run away, enemies clump up because they're all trying to chase you

- use manual aim sometimes for choosing where the harpoon goes (pick the best big guy on the other side, not the one the game picks if you let it autoaim)
-> harpoon gun is probably the #1 weapon in the entire game for manual aiming, it benefits so much it's unbelievable. manual aim otherwise is a really meh mechanic, you'll be surprised what you can do with this and how much more interesting it makes the game!
--> 99% of brotato gameplay is you move to where your weapons attack the thing you want. with harpoon you don't have to do that, instead you move them to where you want to attack them from.
--> you pick off and remove key big enemies *without having to move near them and risk getting boxed in by a crowd*
--> in exchange for that, you need tons of damage and you're inclined to do a really greedy build, buy less defense etc

- pay attention to how/when you go in to pick up materials. you'll be tempted to stay in one place like a corner so the harpoon is more effective (everything goes into a cone in front of you and dies there). need to pick up a huge glob of materials and then reposition sometimes, items like cauldron can help you boost pickup range efficiently

- it's not good to be constantly on the move firing "from the middle of the map outward in random directions" like with normal characters
-> you have to move a different way so that it works with the harpoon
-> make it feel like you're spearfishing and grabbing like 5 fish at a time, then slashing them off the spear with a knife in your other hand

once you get it down it's honestly really fun, one of the most interesting new mechanics and i'm a big negative nancy about this game so that's saying a lot :}

harpoons are really good with creature too, once you use diver to learn the mechanics. harpoons on non-diver characters work a bit different: they do damage so they kill the small guys they pierce, but then drag in the big guys who are now half dead and stunned. it's almost better than with diver, but both ways work for sure.

good luck!

speaking of not working.. i started a run earlier, ended up with 1 harpoon, 4 daggers, 1 particle accelerator... totally goofy silly build just because it seemed funny with the cursed seashell. 1 tapped by a stiff breeze on wave 28 :{

glad it's working!

Just goes to show that the game isn't actually hard enough to warrant optimizing in the main mode. Endless is a funny joke mode with no rewards.

Don't start fights in my thread, please. He was super helpful and kind, and offered good advice. I'm sure I'll get my victory soon. It's kinda funny that I got a win in like a few tries after his and others help though. I just was playing wrong :D

That's not uncommon. Knowing is half the battle, after all.
