it seems like you are building "wrong"
Don't exaggerate what you actually need to survive. You'll get further trying than lying.
Ghost has -100 armor and it only increases damage by 82%. Health quickly becomes a better investment.
Dodge is mandatory. It'll gives you considerable amount of time to heal. Even a little dodge works incredibly well.
Melee lifesteal is tons of time better than most ranged. It lifesteal on hit, every enemy hit. The medical scissors and saw often lets you walk into a herd of enemy and walk out of it at full health.
Another factor is that you get invulnerability frames when you get hit. So if you walk into low damage enemies you can avoid damage for big enemies.
Last bit is knockback. Having a bit can throw enemies off-course or just give you that bit of extra time you need before they hit your hitbox. Getting some on fast-firing weapons alongside lifesteal is great.
Little dodge doesnt do anything, it scales inversely compared to armor. Armor gets less efficient the more you have it, dodge gets more efficient. 10% vs 5% dodge is not a 5% difference, its a 100% difference in received hits. Basically you want all the dodge or none of it.
Melee lifesteal is meh, because melee has no range (except Spears). What if you take some hits through dodge, youre left with lets say 10% hp, and you cant risk running into the huge deathball again? Youre in trouble. For melee best healing is consumables by far, so if you can get luck high do it, boost consumable healing. Easiest and most reliable healing by far. If there's like 5 consumables under that deathball of mobs you can reliably run into it to heal + kill them.
Lifesteal also caps at 10 hp/s which for lets say 60 hp character is not enough to "walk into a mob and get out with full health" if you go in with 10 hp.
In my previous attempts I had made it to the bosses many times but died there. Having the high movespeed made it a lot easier to avoid the boss attacks, and when I didn't the dodge stat often helped out. When dodge didn't, the HP regen kicked in. The fast movement speed bought me time to regen.
Also an important tip is that you don't need to kill the boss, you just need to survive for the 90 seconds.
I do think that for new players the difficulty is a bit high and that it could just scale more severely for the more difficult runs since it seems a lot of people posting in this thread are saying that it isn't that hard.
One thing that I'd really love is checkpoints maybe every 5 levels.
Make sure you get a little bit of armor early and don't get hit by every projectile and you are usually fine. Later focus on getting some more health and then start stacking dodge in the late game if it's not too far in the negative.
