Need Help beating Curious D5
Just to head this off, I've only got a handful of characters that I still need to beat on D5. I may not be great at the game, but I'm not a noob either.

I can't seem to find any useful advice for beating D5 with Curious. There's a character guide in the Steam guides section that simply rates him as "easy" and basically says to build however you want, but it seems like nothing works for me. I've tried running melee and ranged, but I always end up being way behind damage wise until I simply die from being overwhelmed.

I've tried running a full melee primitive build. I've tried running a random assortment of ranged weapons. I've tried both of those strats dozens of times. I've even tried running musical and ramping luck.

Is there something I'm missing here? It just seems like I can't outpace the enemy HP ramping and I haven't been able to get anything OP going even once.

You might be buying too many T1 items, this xp bonus is not worth thinking too hard about.

How do I keep ramping damage early? Many of the early damage increase items seem to show up repeatedly, but they're useless after the first buy.

serious advice: lose over and over until you randomly get super lucky shop RNG

curious is pretty much a pure disadvantage character, anyone who tells you otherwise is cherrypicking 1 good run they had and probably playing danger 0 with 30 hours total in the game

literally every other character can kill more loot aliens and get advantages from it by just buying whistle/lure and being stronger overall, it's a joke

at least winning with it unlocks a good item unlike most of the new characters

On one hand I want you to be right so it vindicates all the time I'm wasting banging my head against the wall with this character, and on the other hand I was really hoping there was some obvious angle I was just missing.

But yeah, I think I gotta agree that this character is just pure luck. Maybe if the enemies didn't have an additional 25% health, you could catch up on the scaling... but that combined with not being able to stack any early game damage items just makes it seem like past wave 10 to 12 you're automatically behind the curve.

Thanks for the reply anyway.

Curious has a lot of micro-optimizations like starting with ghost axe (because still get offered real weapons in shop if you do, and you can farm 10-15% dmg by wave 10 and then sell the axe), picking up weapons with high base damage like Fist (because you're mostly buying more weapons in shop and not damage items) etc.

In my case it all didn't matter though because I found Drill on wave 12 and ended the game with 5k materials.

Up there among my most consistent 'tatos.
Haven't checked the revisioned guide but I'll agree on the easy part.

Only enemies that get any sort of meaningful health increase are the loot aliens so that does favor melee as they're easier to bully into corner.
Mostly play random weapon start and that ratio is also in melee favor. Only the lone icicle I dread as unless you can get out of it through the precise, you're stuck with more icicles.
Had similar experience when I picked medical gun during run and suddenly it's all medical.
Brick might just about be his best & worst starting weapon.

Dupe weapons aren't something to fear as the weapon itself makes up for it but I'll still limit myself to 3 same max but at the start it's much much more valuable than the -% damage which might not even come into effect depending on what you're running.

Curious is a powerhouse , you just need to aim for some key items and good melee weapon like Spears and so on.
(I'm not promoting myself but here you can see couple of runs and the most broken items with him [bag, treasure map, recycler...] )
early game is a bit though but you will be drowning in materials soon enought if you focus on the loot aliens (weird tooth is MVP here)
