cheat codes in sp games are a different thing
i just find annoying that i have to waste time to do arbitrary goals just to unlock characters

Its a single-player game, you aren't affecting anyone else if you're cheating.
That being said, I'm pretty sure right now you would spend more time trying to find a cheat than just unlocking all the characters. For most of thme it happens naturally as you play the game anyw.

This is my save file with everything unlocked and every champion beaten on D5. You can replace your own save file, or you can copy some stuff over, because it's just a text file, it shouldn't be hard to figure out the structure.

And just to actuall answer the question:
Yes, the game is structured incredibly simple and editing the savefile can be done manually without the need of any editors.
The file is in your appdata-directory and can be modified with a basic text-editor.

I will just pop in here and say that playing through and unlocking all the characters does not take long on D0. Another benefit of doing the work yourself is you will learn how the game functions and how to do better. Beating a character on D5 just gives the shiny yellow background for that potato, it does not actually unlock anything in the game.

All that being said, noone should be hating on people for replacing their file with someone elses.

A couple potatoes are unlocked by doing things that would be counterproductive in a normal run (or at least would be counterproductive for anyone other than the potato you unlock by doing so). Sick is vaguely reasonable as an incidental pickup from tanking a stat you don't get much use out of in most runs, but Streamer is only unlocked if you lucked into a specific red item early enough to lean into it and Ghost only if you either do that or play a lot of Brawler (the full 60% dodge is a pretty big investment, but Brawler already gets halfway there being played as intended so the other half is only suboptimal rather than actively bad).

You can edit your save file to unlock every character:

1. Windows Key + R: type %appdata% and hit enter.

2. Find the Brotato folder, then some long number (mine says 76561197993291628), then find the save.json file and open it in notepad.

3. On the 2nd line, replace what is written with this line:
["character_well_rounded","character_brawler","character_crazy","character_ranger","character_mage","character_old","character_lucky","character_mutant","character_generalist","character_sick","character_explorer","character_loud","character_chunky","character_multitasker","character_wildling","character_one_arm","character_pacifist","character_engineer","character_gladiator","character_bull","character_doctor","character_saver","character_soldier","character_masochist","character_entrepreneur","character_farmer","character_ghost","character_speedy","character_artificer","character_knight","character_hunter","character_glutton","character_lich","character_streamer","character_cyborg","character_demon","character_jack","character_arms_dealer"]

4. When you load the game, steam will ask if you want to use the cloud or local save: choose local save. (if this doesn't appear, try disabling cloud saves for the game and re-editing the local file)
