there isnt much tips : you either pick : primitive start aka
pick javelin and once the shop offers it pick: spear/stick/or the cacticlub

or you go precise start with shurikens and pick something pointy that you like
ele daggers = more dmg , the bone shivs more tanky

you pick one of those 2 should do the trick

you can ofc mix and match but that can either go super good or absolut horrible
so not the biggest fan of mixing guns, that can always be done later in the run

I usually play him with slingshots and cacti clubs since they benefit from the ranged damage too. He's one of those characters that are irritating to get off the ground in the early waves since you're praying to shop RNGesus to get the other weapon you want so you can end up with busted runs simply due to that.

There's indeed not much upside to the character. I used to try and get a set of weapons together that "made sense" (like cacti club which has both melee and ranged) but those particular weapons are so horribad that I've moved on to just starting with try to fill my 3 ranged slots with good guns, and then "whatever" primitive weapons I can find I'll throw 3 together just to get the hp bonus, and basically never use them, unless I happen to get spears, spears can sometimes help a little.

But yeah, not a great character. Only real upside is every now and then there is an item like hedgehog or alloy that you can "double dip" your melee and ranged bonus on, but just the same there are other great items like mastery that do nothing for you, so it kind of cancels itself out in terms of opening up and closing down the available items. I guess level ups are slightly better since you have an extra option for flat scaling.

SMGs benefit massively from the high availability of Ranged Damage. Spears are generally strong melee weapons that have the range to still be regularly hitting alongside your ranged weapons.

Harpoon Gun is oft maligned, but it is legit their strongest weapon.

This. Plus slingshots.

Oh yeah, the intended use of Harpoon Gun is to combine it with melee weapons that will murder the thing that is now next to you. Other than Diver's ridiculously large damage boost for doing this and enemy HP increase that makes killing anything without it impractical, this kind of combined arms build is probably only viable for Generalist (due to being forced into it by the mechanics) and maybe Vagabond (who needs as many tags as he can get his hands on and probably does end up mixing melee and ranged in the process).

Harpoon actually works plenty well in any build that is fairly focused on the Melee Damage stat: it has intense scaling alongside a lot of piercing and a strong fire rate, and will likely out-damage the rest of your weapons in most cases.

How well would just getting 6 Harpoon guns work? Because that's what it sounds like you're suggesting!

Being a Tier-2+ weapon, it's difficult to find enough to really fill out — so I've never had a chance to roll _entirely_ Harpoons, alas. Because Harpoons can pierce thru enemies when targeting something beyond them, tho, it's not as awkward to rely on them as you might expect. I can confirm that Harpoon works fine and is fun on One-armed, at least!

i have less than 20 hours in this game. Used the Slingshot-Cacti build, as a base. Got my first boss kill/round 20

Personally, I went right for the Ethereal Axes and Specters. Build attack speed, critical strike, buy some +melee damage (or ranged!), and the usual survival and let his weapons do the rest. Easy wins. Just be sure to make up the armor diff' you get hit with from the Ethereal weapons. I don't think he's bad, he was actually one of the ones I liked playing. You don't have to reroll for one or the other damage type, since he benefits from both.
