I'll add that OP should try to not get into the negative range depending of the weapons, going 6 ranged weapon means that usualy you have enough range (they give stacking range).
Later on it's more of a fine-tuning thing for most melee characters.
Thank you all for the explanations. I just won my first game now with the mutant and a ranged gun build.
Adding range to these is both a safety increase (you can be further from enemies while dealing damage) and a DPS increase (melee weapons can hit more enemies at once, both melee and ranged get more uptime). Don't worry about the slight reduction to attack speed on melee from increased range: the effect is incredibly minor and it is definitely still beneficial.
so If I'm doing a melee build I should go for range? I don't do ranged damage since it doesn't look like it applies in any way, and I usually opt for melee damage over plain damage when I do a melee build (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Also how many stats can you really focus on if you're trying to max things out? It seems like I have to pick 3 and no more than 4, which is usually luck harvesting and then depending on the character it'll be attack speed with range damage or if it's someone like the soldier (who I hate using) I'll do health regen since I can't afford for him to get hit at all.
Lots of questions, sorry if it's confusing, I'm just trying to optimize my builds without using the difficulty sliders. Am on D4 now.
On short weapons like fists you want a bit more range (~60-100) to be able to clear stuff efficiently.
On long weapons like spears you want even more attack speed instead.
Anywhere in between it boils to your preferences really.
Range is never a first priority stat unless you're playing Hunter, so you often end up with different amounts, depending on what shops sell you and whether you can afford stuff like glasses.
