With Ranger, start with Shredder, keep an eye out for Slingshots, Rocket/Nuke launchers. You want to prioritize Ranged Damage over % Damage early on to maximize Ranger's RD bonus gain. Be sure to grab non-common (blue/purple/red) Max HP whenever it shows up. Other than that, there's nothing special about Ranger.
Obviously you don't go pure SMGs though. They are gun type, gun type has a lot of a useful pierce and pushback. Get a couple shotguns and some pistols, maybe even a shredder to accompany to cover the SMG's mass clearing weakness. Guns bring a wide toolbox to cover all your winning needs. You noticed the weapon offering RNG is weighted towards the types you already have right?
You can go pure SMG, you dont need anything else. You dont need pierce or ricoche either.
Neither of you knows how to minmax in this game.
If you swing into rocket launchers it gets worse -- with RL there is basically no point actually leveling ranged damage over attack speed or % damage.
You probably can beat the game with shredder start without investing too much in ranged damage, but why play ranger then.
SMG is much better in this regards -- with 10 base and 80% scaling (correct me if i misremember numbers) you're looking at 8% damage per point of RD even on a red gun.
Another gun that has "good scaling" is a shotgun, but I didn't have any success with it on higher difficulties.
That's just numbers though -- if you don't go full damage with SMGs you get overwhelmed on horde waves unless you manage to get enough pierce/bounce. And not everyone can beat 70% of the game with no pants potato before having opportunity to actually go defensive.
I got it done by using four smgs and two laser guns and going full ranged damage and attack speed and finished it already on the second try with this tactic.
All other tactics i didnt even get remotely as close. Especially stay away from crossbows, even though they work well with the extra 50 range, they still suck majorly.
